Cíle předmětu
This course introduces students to the basic skills of critical reading, thinking and writing. At the end of the course, students will be able to pose effective questions for a subsequent analysis, examine crucial concepts in writings from varied disciplines and make connections between ideas as well as synthesize them. They will learn how to turn their individual interpretation into a complex argument and how to support that argument by relevant textual evidence.

  • What is critical reading? Reading for ratification and for risk
  • Engaging with literary texts: analysis and different forms of interpretation
  • Engaging with the texts in journalism: analysis and formig new questions with a social relevance
  • Engaging with fiction: analysis of different interpretations on a similar theme that questions the role of a teacher
  • Engaging with a videotext: analysis of narrative strategies in film
  • Writing strategies: posing questions
  • Writing strategies: for and against type of argument
  • Writing strategies: comparison and contrast type of argument

Attendance is required.
Active participation in class discussions
Completion of the course is based upon timely completion of various assignments during the semester as well as a longer seminar Work that will be worked on over the whole semester.

The access to the moodlinka course is reserved only to people currently registered there. The password will be announced in the first class of the semester. Although this course addresses some elements of English composition, this is not its major focus. Therefore, this course cannot be recognized as a replacement for other writing courses, where composition is its main activity, offered at the MU university or elsewhere.
