Course objectives
The course provides an introduction to the development of American literature from its colonial beginnings to the middle of the 20th century, focusing on typical American themes and genres, as reflected in non-fiction, fiction, and poetry. The student will learn about the creation of the American literary canon, and will approach it from a contemporary point of view, seeing in details the issues of gender, race and ethnicity, region, and ideology. Independent reading is important for completing the course.
Learning outcomes
The student will become familiar with the overview of American literary history and will read one American novel from the recommended reading list. The course is part of the state exam preparation and features items required for gaining the final degree.

Continuous assessment: 2 reviews (min. 70% pass overall) The student must take 2 out of 3 reviews. The review tests are non-resitable. Summative assessment: test (min. 70% pass) which will include the overview items and reading items (one novel at least)
