Cíle předmětu
The course covers the period from early Saxon literature to the literature of the 20th century. It is focused on the most prominent phenomena such as heroic epic, medieval chivalry romance, Renaissance drama and love poetry, modern novel, romantic and Victorian writing,Modernist writing, Theatre of the Absurd, Angry Young Men, Postmodern and Postcolonial literature. The students are expected to become acquainted with the main literary periods, movements, authors and works in both historical and cultural contexts. The lectures provide an overview and background to the specific seminars. At the end of the course, students should be familiar with the main periods, authors, works and issues in British literature. They should acquire a solid ground for their future studies in literature as well as for the state exams.
Výstupy z učení
At the end of the course, the students will be able to: a) identify chief periods, genres, authors and works in the history of British literature; b) to understand the role culture plays in the development of the society and language; c) to recognize the potential of literature in learning languages.

Výukové metody
Interactive lectures to equip students with a concise overview of the British literature history, against the cultural and historical background. Mood-link-a support.
Metody hodnocení
After each lecture, the students are asked to complete and submit a workheet attached to the topics listed above. At the colloquy, the students will draw a topic and will receive a set of questions from the relevant worksheet. They will also draw a text which they will be asked to read and analyse.
