Course objectives
The course presents basic terms and methods of text analysis (discourse analysis), focusing on the summary and practice of the knowledge and skills obtained in the field of linguistics (phonetics, morphology, lexicology, normative and communicative syntax). After the course, the studnets will be able to apply thses skills on the material of texts of different registers and styles with regard to social context. The course also trains student for preparation of authentic texts when creating study materials in ELT, providing interactive language practice.

  • 1. The notion of text. Text and non-text. 2. Standards of textuality.Intertextuality. 3. Sociolinguistics insights - text and context. 4. Methods of analysis - DA and CDA.A framework for text analysis. 5. The structure of a text. Text typology. 6. The texture of a text. Cohesion and coherence. 7. Patterns of thematic progression. 8. Text analysis - markers of formality and politeness. 9. Spoken text analysis - markers of subjectivity and implicitness. 10. Written text analysis - markers of objectivity and explicitness.

Assessment methods
2-period seminar. Course requirements: Active participation at seminars - no more than 2 unexcused absences tolerated Fulfilling all homework tasks + papers. Final credit test. Teaching methods: classroom discussions, lectures, students' presentations, home assignments, home projects.
