Course objectives
use the microscope; make to native and permanent biological mounts; establish cultures for breeding of ciliates and for breeding of Tenebrio molitor; establish herbárium; use of determination literature; collect and preserve biological material; look up literature and use online sources; get acquainted with the basic methods of field work
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course the student will be able to:
properly use the microscope; make to native and permanent biological properly use the microscope; make to native and permanent biological mounts; establish culture for breeding ciliates and Tenebrio molitor; establish herbarium; use of determination literature; collect and preserve biological material; look up literature and use online sources; orientate in field work.
Syllabus
  • Laboratory:
  • 1. Protocol, drawing. Microscopic techniques, aids in microscopy. Basic of microscopy.
  • 2. Breeding ciliates, establish culture for breeding ciliates and Tenebrio molitor.
  • 3. Mounts. Native and pernament mounts. Dry mount. Mount with medium. Mount with epidermis and stoma - the relief method.
  • 4.Collection and preserve of biological material. Herbarium. Collection and preservation of plant.
  • 5. Tools for the identification of biological objects.
  • 6. Literature, online sources.

  • 1. Introduction to practical field teaching in the Botanical Garden of the Faculty of Education, Masaryk University, Kejbaly.

Teaching methods
Form of teaching: Laboratory excercise (2 teaching hours/14 days, field excersice together 8 teaching hours). Methods of teaching: explanation, instruction, observation, experiment, work with literature.

1. Laboratory protocols.
2. Practical exam - 2 permanent preparations, herbarium sheet.
3. Attendance at course: laboratory exercise: max. 1 non-participation in a 2-hour exercise per semester, field teaching: full participation in 8 lessons.
