Course objectives
Chapters in the Syntax of Czech language 2 follows Chapters in the Syntax of Czech language 1.
The targets:
1. Explain the fundamental attitude to the compound and complex sentence in the contemporary Czech linguistics. (F. Trávníček, F. Kopečný, K. Svoboda, M. Grepl, P. Karlík, J. Hrbáček and others)
2. Establishment of the presupposition of the practical application of the theoretical knowledge when creating algorithms for identification of the types of clauses and of the relationships between coordinated clauses.
3. Establishment of the ability to apply theoretical knowledge when identifying and classifying various types of the compound and complex sentences.
Learning outcomes
It is presupposed student after finishing the course:
(a) students know the terminology of syntax concerning complex and compound sentence;
(b) students can use knowledge of terminology in analysis of compound and complex sentence practically;
(c) students are able to differentiate various types of clauses and to identify relationship between coordinated clauses;
(d) students are able to describe various types of clauses and to give reasons for their opinions.
Syllabus
  • 1. Criteria for the differentiation between sentence and compound sentence, between sentence and complex sentence.
  • 2. Compound sentence, complex sentence Connectives (word class of connectives, syntactical function, meaning).
  • 3. Types of the compound sentence. Juxtaposition. Co-ordination. Complex sentence, subordination. Criteria of the classification of complex sentence.
  • 4. Sentence and clause.
  • 5. Co-ordination in the compound sentence. Types of the semantic function of the co-ordination, the connective of the co-ordination. 6. Subordination.
  • 7. Classification of the clauses in the complex sentence.
  • 8. Functional sentential perspective determined by context. Word-order.

Assessment methods
Credit requirements: knowledge of the theme of syllabus; it will be proved by written work (essay) - reflexion of one subject of the lecture (4 pages of text).
