Course objectives
Students will be able to explain the development of literary trends and movements in the particular period of Czech literature. They will be able to identify and analyse the style of outstanding literary personalities of the period. They will be able to interpret literary pieces as well as justify and support their views using their knowledge of literary studies. The seminar offers a view of the development of the Czech literature after the Velvet revolution in November 1989. There will be presented the main tendencies and layers of the contemporary prose and poetry.
Learning outcomes
The students will learn about the work of individual authors through the practical interpretation of selected texts. They will also be given a systematic outline of outstanding personalities and their works.

  • Seminar topics: 1. General characteristics of the period. Outline of significant literary groups, periodicals and publishing houses. Literary criticism of the 1990s. Significant literary-critical works after the year 1989. 2. „Reynek“ line in the Czech poetry. Over the works of J. M. Stöhr, P. Kolmačka, M. Doležal. 3. „Style-bound“. Over the works of J.F. Typlt, M. Langer, J. Pížl. 4. „Poezie intenzity i ztišení“. Nad tvorbou P. Borkovce, B. Trojak, M. Děžinský. 5. „Addressed by the reality“. Over the works of A) P. Motýl, P. Hruška, B) V. Rosí a R. Fajkus. 6. Diaries and memoires literature in the 1990s. 7. Reflections of the city chronotop. Over the works of M. Ajvaz, D. Hodrová , J. Kratochvil a J. Topol. 8. In the labyrint of mystery: R. Ludva, M. Urban, J. Jandourek,V. Vokolek 9. Three attempts at "the analysis of normalisation": M. Viewegh, H. Daněk, B. Vaněk-Úvalský 10. Lyrical utterance bound. P. Brycz, J. Vrak, J. Balabán 11. Teaching methods
Students will use and enhance their knowledge of trends of Czech literature in the period in question. Students will be instructed how to develop all their knowledge of literary history and interpretational skills in order to communicate more effectively with a literary work. They will creatively apply their knowledge gained not only in contact classes but also through their independent work with recommended literature which they will be able to consult with the teacher regularly.
Assessment methods
Credit requirements: - submission of a seminar paper, - discussion of an assigned topic. For students who register the course as an optional course within the common course subjects, the requirements consis of a seminar paper only.
