Course objectives
The subject Theory of Literature for teachers of higher qualification course focuses on the poetics of poetry, prose and drama. It shows students various possibilities of interpretation of a literary text with regard to different methodologies. Students will be able to interpret literary pieces as well as justify and support their views using their knowledge of literary studies. The aim of the subject is to help students master methods of literary studies and offer them an insight into the principles of the literary science.

Teaching methods
In the form of a seminar (interpretations and analysis of selected works), students will get a deeper insight into poetics of a literary work. They will further develop their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more efficiently. They will creatively use their knowledge gained not only in contact classes but also in their individual study of recommended literature which they will be able to discuss regularly with their teacher. The main method of teaching is a seminar.
Assessment methods
Type of completion: oral examination during which students answer the questions related to one of the assigned topics and interprete a literary text. They also hand in a seminar paper - interpretation of a chosen piece of poetry, prose or drama.
