Course objectives
Students will be able to interpret literary pieces as well as justify and support their views using their knowledge of literary studies. Students will gain literary theoretical terminology and be able to apply these terminology to interpretation of literary texts. The course objective is to master the essentials of literary studies and to introduce the terminology and methodology of literary science.
Syllabus
  • 1. The basic concepts and bibliography concerning the subject. 2. Quotations, publication ethics, bibliographic data. 3. Literary work as a sign. 4. Language means of the literary text. 5. Thematic analyses. The structure of the literary work. 6. Introduction to the theory of verse. 7. Prosodic systems in czech literature. 8. Verse, strophic figure. 9. Free verse: analyses. 10. Final test.

Teaching methods
Form of course: seminar. Students will further develop their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more efficiently. They will creatively use their knowledge gained not only in contact classes but also in their individual study of recommended literature which they will be able to discuss regularly with their teacher.
Assessment methods
Credit requirements: intensive preparation, reading books, students hand in a written assignment and pass the final test which contains questions related to the topics listed in the syllabus.
