Course objectives
The seminar introduces students to the essentials of the literary criticism. They will study the literary works from the period of the Enlightenment and National Revival. Students will develop their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more efficiently.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course, students will be able to:
- identify basic features of artistic movements of the given era;
- identify and analyze styles of important figures of the literary process in the give era;
- describe the cultural and social atmosphere in the Czech lands and in Europe;
- interpret the contemporary literary works based on their theoretical knowledge;
- create and present an expert essay about the given topic.

  • 1. Introduction to the study of Czech literature and the Czech literature for children and youth of the first half of the 19th century. 2. Linguistic defence and its role at the beginning of Czech National Revival. 3. Literature of the Revival and its inspiration by world literature, reading of youth. 4. Classicism in literature. 5. Jan Kollár. 6. Old-Czech literary forgeries and their role in cultural happenings. 7. Václav Kliment Klicpera and the Czech theatre. 8. Karel Hynek Mácha and romantism in Czech literature. Reception of the "reading-book author". 9. Karel Sabina. 10. Božena Němcová. Reception of the "reading-book author". 11. Karel Havlíček Borovský. Reception of the "reading-book author". 12. Teaching methods
Students will get an insight into basic trends and movements of Czech literature in the period in question, as well as into the specific nature of their poetics. They will be able to identify and analyze the style of outstanding personalities, significant for that particular period. Students will further develop their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more efficiently. They will creatively use their knowledge gained not only in contact classes but also in their individual study of recommended literature which they will be able to discuss regularly with their teacher.
Assessment methods
Type of course: seminar. Type of completion: a written test in Czech literature of the first half of the 19th century and the enlightment literature. The test covers ten questions. Questions are evaluated separately. Passmark is up to and including 2,9. Students are also oblidged to hand in a seminar paper.
