Course objectives
The topic of the seminars is the issue of the Czech literature during the years 1969 – 1989 (with the inner differentiation of 1970’s and 1980’s). Students will through seminar work (combining lectures, discussion and independent work in terms of essays and interpretations of selected works) acquire knowledge of literary movements, genres and trends of the postwar period of Czech literature.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the students will be able to explain the development of literary movements and genres of the given period of Czech literature in terms of poetry, prose and drama. They will be able to interpret literary works, and defend and support their opinions using their knowledge of literary studies. Students will also deepen their knowledge of literary studies and their interpretative skill in order to communicate with a literary work more effectively.
Syllabus
  • 1. Officially published poetry in the 1970’s (so-called thirty-five-year-olds). 2. Czech poetic samizdat and exile in the 1970’s (poetry and underground). 3. Officially published prose in the 1970’s (works with themes of profession, prose with the themes of the 20th century, historical novel, natural fiction). 4. Czech prosaic samizdat and exile in the 1970’s (the image of the so-called normalization, dissent and exile in Czech prose). 5. Officially publish poetry in the 1980’s (the returns of forbidden authors into Czech literature). 6. Czech poetic samizdat and exile in the 1980’s (important authors and their production). 7. Officially published prose in the 1980’s (social prose, fringe genres, contact with the post-modern) 8.- 9. Important authors of Czech samizdat and exile and their production in the 1980’s. 10. Czech theater and drama in the 1970’s and 80’s (official production). 11. Dramatic production of Czech samizdat and exile during the so-called normalization period. 12. Literary studies and criticism during the 1970’s and 80’s.

Teaching methods
Type of course: seminar. Methods: analyses and interpretations of selected works. Class and group discussions. Students will creatively use their knowledge gained not only in contact classes but also in their individual study of recommended literature which they will be able to discuss regularly with their teacher.
Assessment methods
Credit requirements: - preparation according to the teacher´s instructions, including its written form, - active participation and attendance( 80% ), - two oral presentations(cca 10 min.), - seminar paper.
