Basic understanding of the terminology of phonetics and phonology, morphology, word formation, syntax and stylistics is expected.

Course objectives
Students can explain the current interpretation of bilingualism (multilingualism) and differences in ways of speech acquisition and speech development of bilingual individuals. Students understand the specifics of bilingual families and societies.
Syllabus
  • 1.-2. Definition of bilingualism; types of bilingualism; simultaneous and successive bilingualism. 3.-4. Speech acquisition, speech focused on a child; speech development of bilingual individuals; bilingualism and intelligence. 5.-6. Bilingual families; case studies describing bilingual individuals. 7. Bilingual and multilingual societies 8.-9. Monolingualism a bilingualism – similarities x differences; code switching and translating. 10.-12. Cultural identity, values and standards.
