Course objectives
The course aims to present the phenomenon of multiculturality in contemporary czech literature. Thematization of different cultures is currently a major literary trend not only in czech literature, where it began after year 2000. Topic of different cultures is in nowadays globalizing and more and more nationally and religiously diversified czech society relevant more than ever. Also, it can be assumed it will grow in its importance even in future. The course deals not only with multiple forms of this topic (literature thematizing national, ethnic, religious and other minorities, literature thematizing exotic lands and cultures, emigrant and immigrant literature), but also incites discussion on didactic application of literature thematizing different cultures in teaching on lower secondary school, grammar/high school and in teaching pupils with different mother tongue.
Learning outcomes
Students get acquainted with various forms of different cultures thematization in contemporary czech literature. They are also going to actively develop their ability to didactically use literature thematizing different cultures in teaching on elementary school, high school and in teaching pupils with different mother tongue.

  • Events and conditions founding thematization of different cultures trend in czech literature.
  • Literature of national minorities and literature on the topic of national minorities.
  • Literature thematizing exotic lands and cultures ("výpravy za exotikou"/"the quest for exotic")
  • Emigrant and immigrant literature.

Teaching methods
Discussion, moderated debate (bound up with home preparation), interpretation of literary text.
Assessment methods
Requirements: students create two mutually connected texts, 1) all-round literary interpretation of selected literary work and 2) essay on potential and possible limits and risks of didactic use of selected text in teaching.
