Students will learn about key developments in the history of science and technology (especially in Europe)
Learning outcomes
Students will be aware of major milestones in the history of science and technology in Europe.
Syllabus
  • 1. Prague astronomical clock and the calendars displayed on it. 2. Johannes Guttenberg, the discovery of printing, and its consequences. 3. Johannes Kepler and Tycho Brahe and their work in astronomy. 4. Isaac Newton between religion and physics. 5. Military schools and polytechnics: education of engineers 6. Johann Gregor Mendel and the discovery of the laws of genetics. 7. Travelling: railways, waterways, roads. 8. The need for standards in technology 9. Specialisation of university education. 10. Science as a new religion? 11. Science and society. 12. Modern society and technology.
