Course objectives
The aim of the lecture is: to acquire the basic knowledge on the issues of general and French phonetics; to understand the ways and place of articulation of individual phones of French sound system, the basic suprasegmental phenomena, ie. liaison, stress, rhythm, intonation, particularly the difficult ones for a Czech user (mastering the system of the international phonetic transcription is also included); to apply the acquiered knowledges and skills at school. In the seminar, students will practice individual sounds of the French phonetic system, the correct spelling - dictations, language skills and correct pronunciation - training of poems by heart, recording of students pronunciation and its analysis, listen to recordings of native speakers , international phonetic transcription training. Students can work independently because this course has an e-learning support.
Learning outcomes
After the lecture student will be able to: - discuss the problems of general phonetics and French phonetics; - describe the manner and places of individual voice articulation - overwrite the text in the international phonetic transcription API - apply the knowledge and skills in practice. After the course student will be able to: - improve the pronunciation of individual phonemes in the French phone system; - practice spelling, speech skills and correct pronunciation; - practice international phonetic transcription.

  • 1. Introduction to the French phonological system. 2. Respiratory system, organs of speech. 3. Overview of French oral vowels. 4. Overview of French nasal vowels. 5. Overview of French semi-vowels. 6. Overview of French consonants. 7. The concept of phoneme and sound. 8. Construction of the French syllable and of the French rhythmic group. 9. Accent and intonation - basic intonation patterns. 10. Liaison and enchaînement. 11. Aspects of fluent speech - assimilation, elision. 12. Phonetic errors of Czech students. Syllabus of seminars (one chapter = 2 weeks) 1. Oral vowels with one timbre. 2. Oral vowels with two timbres. 3. Nasal vowels. 4. Semi- vowels. 5. Consonants. 6. Dictations - practicing of correct spelling, reciting of poems - pronunciation practice, practice of phonetic transcription API.

Teaching methods
Lecture. Seminary, discussion, presentation, consultations (combined study - Primary and Nursery school.
Assessment methods
Requirements for lecture ending: test (as a successful test is considered one with at least 70 % right answers). Requirements for seminar ending: active participation 70%(not applicable for combined study - Primary and Nursery schools - at least half of the consultations is required here) dictate, phonetic transcription of sentences, reciting of poetry, vocabulary.
