Course objectives
The course in stylistics presents a review of the distinctive features of the functional styles in French. It focuses on the stylistic means available in French at phonetical, phonological, graphetical, morphological, syntactical, lexical and semantic level and introduces the students to the study of the stylistics of a text.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the students: -gain basic knowledge of general stylistics -adopt stylistically correct discourse -are able to compare aspects of French and Czech languages concerning phonostylistics and translation -are able to analyze different stylistic figures -are able to apply their knowledge and skills in practice.

  • 1. Rhetoric and stylistics: history, definitions, terminology. 2. Styles, linguistic and grammatical means.3.System comparison of two languages (French and Czech). Problems of translation. 3. Phonostylistics. 4.Grammar of the text (text coherence). 5. Denotation, connotations in the context of studied languages.6.Stylistic figures: comparison, metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche, antithesis, euphemism, litotes, pleonasm, calambur, anaphora, gradation, ellipse…
