Course objectives
The students will be able to understand, explain and use the knowledge of physical education in the area of athletic and physical games. They will be able to use the knowledge and skills in the development of physical skills of younger school-aged children. They will be able to diagnose the technique of various physical skills and design exercises for improvement. They will be able to organize and suitably include physical games as required in various parts of physical education.
Syllabus
  • 1. Basics of safety and hygiene in athletic training, structure of athletic warm-up. Basic terms relating to running, jumping and throwing. Methodological and technical principles of the running alphabet.
  • 2. Preparatory exercises and games for the development of running speed, endurance, take-off strength and nimbleness.
  • 3. Technique and methodology of running.
  • 4. Technique and methodology of jumping.
  • 5. Technique and methodology of throwing.
  • 6. Basic starting commands and signals, training of various types of starts. Equipment used for measuring performance, methods of measuring and recording achievements, basic rules of various disciplines.
  • 7. Extension of the battery of preparatory exercises and games for various athletic activities using the sets of athletic equipment of the Czech Athletic Federation (Athletics in schools project).
  • 8. Learning about the basic concepts relating to physical games and relevant equipment, basic rules and organizational guidelines for physical games. Safety of games.
  • 9. Physical games and preparatory exercises for the development of physical skills.
  • 10. Physical games involving manipulation with sports equipment, competitive, combat and creative physical games. Practical classification of physical games by various authors.
  • 11. Physical games for improving physical skills as part of various thematic units in relation to sports games.
  • 12. Development of a battery of physical games suitable for PE lessons in the first stage of elementary schools classified by grades and educational plans.

Teaching methods
Regular classes. Verbal, demonstrative, and practical.
Assessment methods
Diagnostic assessment of methodological series for athletic and game skills; demonstration of organization of athletics-based physical games on a given topic; set of five written descriptions of physical games with a focus on the development of athletic skills according to the educational programme for the first stage of elementary schools.
