Students enrolling in the course are expected to have reached the minimum CEFR level of A2+. To prove so students are expected to have taken the CJV_AJA2k and CJV_AJA2 courses.

Course objectives
1 Students will acquire specific vocabulary within the four topic-based units while employing all four language skills.
2 Within the language skill of speaking students will acquire the basics of oral presentation.
3 Within the language skill of writing students will be able to produce a simple argumentative essay.
4 Students will acquire grammar competence specified in the below-mentioned grammar chapters at the B1 CEFR level.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, the student will be able to: understand spoken LSP texts at B1 level of the CEFR; understand written LSP texts at B1 level of the CEFR; successfully participate in a spoken interaction dealing with relevant LSP issues at B1 level of the CEFR; give an oral presentation on a specialist topic; use selected specialist terminology with natural and sophisticated control; show a good command of selected grammar structures at B1 level of the CEFR;
Syllabus
  • JVk015 English for Social Educators
  • Multidisciplinary focus of social pedagogy is reflected in topic-based orientation of the individual courses taught at the Faculty of Education. In the Bachelor study programme for distance learners, the course is geared towards selected social and legal issues.
  • Topic 1 EDUCATION (basic aspects of primary, secondary and tertiary education, literacy, poverty and literacy, social aspects of student transition to university).
  • Topic 2 FAMILY, ADOPTION, FOSTER CARE (adoption, foster care, guardianship, single parents, single families, divorce, abortion).
  • Topic 3 HUMAN RIGHTS (right to life, freedom from torture, freedom from slavery, right to liberty and security, right to a fair trial, freedom from discrimination, freedom of belief and religion, right to privacy vs. national security, watchdog).
  • Topic 4 LEGAL AND ETHICAL ISSUE OF SOCIAL WORK, COMMUNICATION IN SOCIAL WORK (the code of conduct in social work, client communication).

Teaching methods
There are four consultations during the semester for which students are expected to prepare by performing reading and writing activities, as well as exercises aimed at the acquisition of the most common lexico-grammatical items typical of the specific topic in question. All activities and tasks aimed at developing students' receptive (listening and reading) and productive skills (mainly formal writing and mainly informal speaking).
Assessment methods
Course completion requirements:
1) Attendance and active participation in the consultations (1 class can be missed)
2) Submitting home assignments in due time (specified by course instructor)
3) Oral presentation
4) FINAL EXAM: Written part: Test (reading, writing, listening, grammar and vocabulary), pass mark 65%. Spoken part: follows after the successful completion of the written part. It consists of three parts: a)introduction of yourself and your work experience, about 1 minute; b) presentation of interesting information from an article connected to SE (about 5-6 min. long); c)teacher-student oral interaction (3 min. long). Only students who have completed the above tasks and satisfied the above requirements may sit the final exam.

Information on completion of the course: Pro úspěšné ukončení předmětu jsou předepsány v semestru průběžné kontroly. Jazykový kurz není určen pro začátečníky. Výuka je v angličtině a kurz je ukončen písemnou a ústní zkouškou na úrovni B1.
The course is taught annually.
General note: Zápis vyžaduje úspěšné absolvování vstupního testu JVk001 (obvykle v lednu). Výuka probíhá v angličtině. Kurz je ukončen písemnou a ústní zkouškou na úrovni B1.
