Prerequisites
JVp019 English for Soc. Educators – A
Pass in JVp019 course. The JVp020 course represents a B1 CEFR level course in intermediate English for specific purposes. The course consists of two basic components:i) grammar at the B1 CEFR level which is mainly explained using the examples of the general or general academic English language, ii) specific vocabulary related to the disciplinary/topic orientation of the course in question. Emphasis is put on four language skills, speaking and writing as well as listening and reading comprehension.

Course objectives
1 Students will acquire the specific vocabulary presented within the topic-based units while using all four language skills.
2 Students will further develop their oral presentation skills.
3 Students will produce a piece of writing in the form of a report.
4 Students will acquire grammar competence specified in the below-mentioned grammar chapters at the B1 CEFR level.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, the student will be able to: understand spoken LSP texts at B1 level of the CEFR; understand written LSP texts at B1 level of the CEFR; successfully participate in a spoken interaction dealing with relevant LSP issues at B1 level of the CEFR; give an oral presentation on a specialist topic; use selected specialist terminology with natural and sophisticated control; show a good command of selected grammar structures at B1 level of the CEFR.

  • Multidisciplinary focus of social education is reflected in topic-based orientation of the individual courses taught at the Faculty of Education. This course (B) is geared towards a range of social issues, including:
  • Controversial issues and transformative education
  • Human rights
  • Immigration and working with displaced people
  • Crime and punishment
  • Working with vulnerable groups

Teaching methods
Oral presentation, pair and group work, role plays, discussion, frontal as well as student-centred instruction.
Assessment methods
Course completion requirements:
1 Attendance and active participation in the seminars (2 classes can be missed)
2 Submitting assignments in due time (specified by course instructor)
3 FINAL EXAM: Written part: Test (reading, writing, listening, grammar and vocabulary), pass mark 65%. Spoken part: follows after the successful completion of the written part. Monologue: introduction of your professional goals, about 1 minute. Dialogue in pairs: discussion of a topic studied during the term (see topics 1-4), about 6 minutes. Final grade: Grade A (100―90 points), Grade B (89―84), Grade C (83―77), Grade D (76―71), Grade E (70―65 points).
Only students who have completed the above tasks and satisfied the above requirements may sit the final exam.
