Course objectives
During the course, students get acquainted with the most important tendencies in diachronic change concerning the German language after World War II. The overall aim is to make students aware of the variability of language and to prevent them from building up an attitude fixed exclusively on formal correctness in foreign language use.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
- distinguish between linguistic changes and changes in the no-linguistic sections of language competence,
- recall the most important tendencies of development in modern German,
- recognize the effects of linguistic change in language material,
- analyze language material in a chosen domain with regard to resent linguistic innovations.
Syllabus
  • - Introduction: linguistic change and models explaining linguistic change;
  • - normative and descriptive grammar, puristic tendencies;
  • - changes in the pronunciation after World War II;
  • - restructuring in inflectional morphology (shifts in inflectional classes, reducing redundend case marking, expansion of periphrastic constructions);
  • - expansions in derivational morphological (affixoids);
  • - syntactic changes (the rise of the transitiv pattern, embedded clauses with "weil");
  • - changes in the lexicon and integration of loan words.
