Prerequisites
Successful mastery of the Russian language at the 1st year Mgr. studies of Russian language / minimum language level B2. Knowledge of the Czech language at the level of a native speaker.

Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the basic foundations and concepts of translation theory with a focus on the practical (and, from the perspective of the topics, disciplinary) component. Emphasis is placed on strengthening the skills of working with diverse language corpora and tools based on artificial intelligence in translation and text stylization. The course also aims at introducing post-editing of machine translation and acquiring basic habits in checking and editing automatically translated text.
Learning outcomes
The student will be able to: - orient themselves in the basic theory and practice of translation; - distinguish between source texts in terms of style and carry out the preparatory steps of understanding and interpreting the text before proceeding to translation; - recognise and preserve the purpose and function of different types of texts when translating; - apply appropriate electronic and internet tools and resources in translation; - edit machine-translated texts.

  • 1. Introduction to translation theory. Translation errors.
  • 2. Modern technologies in translation practice. Possibilities of using language corpora and tools based on artificial intelligence.
  • 3. Understanding of the source text, its interpretation and re-stylization. Translation of difficult linguistic phenomena (from Russian to Czech).
  • 4. Officialese and its specifics. Translation of a this type of text.
  • News style and its specifics. Translation of a news text.

Teaching methods
Theoretical preparation, reading, linguistic and content analysis of texts, discussion at seminars.
Assessment methods
Credit is awarded for work in regular seminars and completion of all tasks. Continuous preparation for seminars based on an interactive syllabus is expected.
