Course objectives
Having met the course requirements, students have a deep insight into the problematic nature of genres and of the development of literature for young adults. They are able to classify individual genres through works of the most significant authors . They are able to choose suitable extracts for school and afterschool activities of children. Students are able to evaluate current literary production for children and young adults.
Syllabus
  • 1. Characters of outcasts in literature for children and youth, types of literary characters and changes of their characteristics and function. 2. The picture of a handicapped child in literature, detabooization of a handicap in the history of Czech literature for children and youth, literary works of handicapped children and teenagers. 3. Literature for youth as one of the means of multicultural education. 4. The problematic nature of literary works related to minorities (ethnic and other), literary works of minority authors in the context of Czech literature for youth. 5. Literature for youth and education to tolerance (racial, religious, etc.). 6. Topical issues in literature for youth, so-called instructive literature for youth, literature for youth and etopaedia. 7. Philosophy and literature for youth, demanding topics in childrens´ reading (e.g. the issue of death in literature for children).

Teaching methods
Type of course: lecture. The lectures are enhanced by students´ individual reading.
Assessment methods
Credit requirements: colloquium testing students´ knowledge of assigned topics and of recommended literature. Students will draw a question and answers that question in writing than following expert debate.
