Prerequisites
The course presents philosophical and theoretical background of research methods, research design, application of the methodology tools (especially in discourse attitudes), research report training, critical evaluation of possibilities and limits of research methods, their utilization for social science research. The course emphasizes the role of a man as an active subject participating in changes his own life status, which deconstructs the dimension of cartesian point of view as well as determinism, eventually linear evolution principle in context of educational phenomena. Theoretical background of this interpretation is formed out of ideas of social constructivism, post-structuralism, neopositivism, hermeneutics and phenomenology. Principles of research of “critical theories” are included in the course to certain extend.

Course objectives
At the end of the course the students: • present their research based on theory • describe the differences between qualitative and quantitative methodology research • discuss the research paradigm • analyse written materials • apply the methodology tools to the social education research • critically evaluate the research data validity • elaborate research design and research reports
Syllabus
  • 1. Position of social education in the pedagogical science system. Subject and limits of social education as a social discipline in comparison to natural science. 2. Basic terminology, theories, classification, structure of pedagogic disciplines, auxiliary and limit science. Scientific issues of pedagogy, research subject. Difference between modern and post-modern pedagogy. 3. Qualitatively oriented research paradigm (philosophical bases, terminology, examples of research methods. 4. Quantitatively oriented research paradigm (philosophical bases, terminology, examples of research methods. 5. Critical research (aims, research subject, influence on social reality). 6. Research design creation, outline of topics and issues methods of data collection. 7. Research report, practice of research data interpretation, polemics concerning the research results.
