Course objectives
The aim of the course is to know the basic information about pedagogy of visually impaired. At the end of the course students should understand and work with information on: Classification of visual impairment, occurrence and causes, children with low vision, partially sighted, blind children, children with multiple disabilities, deafblind children, system of education, types of schools for students with visual impairment, counselling and social services, technical aids, visual stimulation, mobility, guide dogs.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to: - use the basic terminology and classification of visual impairment - to describe a counseling system for the visually impaired with a focus on early and school age and on adulthood - to focus on basic aids and measures that are used by people with visual impairments in the field of education and everyday life - to describe the influence of severe visual impairment on human personality in psychological processes and to understand the issue of multiple disability
Syllabus
  • 1. Definition of the field. History of care for the visually impaired in our country and abroad. 2. Physiology of the vision process. Development of visual perception. Basic examination of visual functions. 3. Basic pathology of vision in children and adults from a functional point of view. Manifestations of defects. 4. Special aids for the visually impaired and the blind. 5. Early intervention - goals, offer of services, specifics of support and intervention. 6. Personality of a person with visual impairment, influence on mental processes (perception, thinking, attention, behavior, speech and communication) and on the psychomotor development of a child. 7. Child with visual impairment in preschool age (preschool education, child with impaired binocular vision and reeducation of these defects) 8. Possibilities of education of visually impaired pupils in the Czech Republic, educational needs and support measures. Braille. Mobility. 9. Visual impairment as a part of combined disability. 10. Counseling and intervention: service providers, service specifications. 11. Communication with visually impaired people. Basics of accompaniment.
