Course objectives
The aim of this course is to 1) enhance language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and systems (vocabulary and grammar) by means of up-to-date topics related to education, school, teaching career and academic sphere to achieve level B2; 2) acquire specialist terminology for individual disciplines; 3) develop students' academic skills: (Master's thesis abstract and literature review.)
Syllabus
  • 1) Pressing issues in Czech primary and secondary education, future prospects. 2) Tertiary education (universities, colleges) now and in the future. 3) Universities – research or education centres? Language of science and research. 4) Thesis abstract, related academic vocabulary/phrases, foreign information sources. 5) E-learning and distant forms of study. 6) Teaching pupils/students with specific learning difficulties. 7) Professional career – required qualities. 8) Teaching career X Management career. 9) Plans for the future. Work and employment. CV and cover letter. Job interview. 10) Oral presentations; Grammar: Conditionals; Articles; Countable and uncountable nouns, Quantifiers; some, any, no…; Reported speech; Prepositional phrases; sentence transformations III; Transitional expressions; Phrasal verbs.

Teaching methods
Weekly ninety-minute seminars designed for teaching English for specific and academic purposes (acitvities developing students' awarness of language skills and systems within B2 level - listening and reading tasks; grammar and vocabulary practice, discussions and other speaking activities, e-learning for acquiring specialist terminology and practising grammar etc.
Assessment methods
Credit requirements: 1) Attendance (only two classes can be missed due to personal reasons), home preparation for classes, active participation in classes; 2) Oral presentation; 3) Submitted in-term assignments: Master's thesis abstract + literature review of Master's thesis sources in English (must be submitted on the date of the oral exam); 4) Exam: 2 parts: A) written (parts: listening, reading comprehension, use of English, writing, terminology); level B2. Total: 70 marks; PASS MARK = 65 % (45 points). B) Oral – A) monologue + B) spoken interaction between two students. Total: 30 marks; PASS MARK = 65 % (19 marks). Only those students who have successfully passed a written part can sit for an oral part of the exam!

General note: Nutno mít absolvovaný předchozí předmět typu C. Studenti skládají závěrečnou zkouškou na úrovni B2.
