Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce the students to Roma history and culture, so they can understand Roma mentality better and contribute to improvement of coexistence with majority. The course covers basic knowledge of Romani studies, which are further discussed via interactive lessons, discussions and students´ contributions. The course develops the Basics of Romani studies course 1 from the winter term.
Learning outcomes
Student can be introduce the students to Roma history and culture, so they can understand Roma mentality better and contribute to improvement of coexistence with majority. Also they will be able to identify the causes of problems of majority and minority coexistence in society as well as describe the history of Roma nation and attitude of Roma families to education.
Syllabus
  • Roma communities in Brno as generalized social phenomenon - differentiation, housing issues, unemployment, education and further problems of the communities. Education of Roma pupils, difficulties, socio-educational specifics. Communication of school with Roma families. The most frequent educational problems of Roma pupils. Education possibilities of Roma youth and adults. Romani culture and heritage: Czech and Slovak Romani literature, poetry and fiction, selected publications, theatre and film production. Significant Roma authors: Elena Lacková, Jana Horváthová, Janko Horváth, Tera Fabiánová, Vlado Oláh etc. their contribution to Romani culture. Religion of the Roma, symbolism, magic, myths, superstitions. Influential Roma representatives, musicians, bands, their work and contribution. Romani songs and fairy tales, motives and stories. Specifics of the language context in the songs and fairy tales. Organizations in south Moravian region supporting education of Roma people, improving the integration of the communities. Their aims, philosophy, importance, strategies. Schools actively supporting the education of their Roma pupils (students). Problem of racial discrimination of the Roma, perception of the minority from the point of view of majority and vice versa. Projecting in the field of Romani studies in context of education, social work, social education etc. Visiting the Museum of Romani culture in Brno.

Seminars – discussion about Romani issues
Assessment methods
There are two possibilities which you can chose from: • suggest some topics suitable to school curriculum – suggest and describe methodologically a lesson of the Romani topic – length, age group, equipment, lesson´s objective – What do the children get from the lesson? What do they learn – skills, knowledge, e.g. video, documentary, articles, books, creative workshops, history, debates, discussions… create methodology handouts. Presentable in the very last seminar. • Realization of a project supporting and integration of Roma people in various spheres (education, social work, health care, etc.) Also presentable in the very last seminar.
