Course objectives
The objective of the course is to introduce some psychosocial aspects of family coexistence in the context of health psychology. A partial objective is to provide space for the students to plan and carry out a small research task aimed at this area.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the students will:
- Be able to understand the psychosocial aspects of family issues,
- Understand the significance of the family and its socialization functions,
- Be familiar with current family trends,
- Have the basic knowledge of the historical development of the family institution,
- Understand the relationships between family life and protective (and risk) health factors.
Syllabus
  • Content of lectures:
  • 1. Sociobiological roots of the family, parental and partnership behaviour;
  • 2. The family as a system;
  • 3. Functions of the family, structure of the family;
  • 4. Developmental cycle of the family, transformation of functions;
  • 5. Partnership, choice of the partner, cohabitation;
  • 6. The family and the child, socialization, transitory crisis, ‘developmental tasks’;
  • 7. The family and stressful situations, family crisis;
  • 8. Long-term crisis in the family;
  • 9. Divorce and remarriage, after-divorce situation, reconstructed family, status of the child in a reconstructed family;
  • 10. Work, economy, household;
  • 11. Families with a difference I;
  • 12. Families with a difference II.
  • Content of seminars:
  • Seminars are delivered as teaching blocks in which students present small research assignments. The assignments related to the topics of the lectures shall be selected by students at the beginning of the term from a list published on the web information system of MU. The assignments shall be worked on throughout the term. Each presentation shall include discussion and feedback from peer students and teachers.

Teaching methods
Presentation of the results of seminar assignments, discussions, case reports. During the respective terms students shall work on their seminar assignments.
Assessment methods
During the terms students shall work on their seminar assignments; a presentation of the assignment is a prerequisite for completion of the course.
