Course objectives
The students will learn about environmental factors that affect the organism and will be able to use this information and knowledge to select appropriate preventive measures against various diseases. Another objective is to promote the students’ environmental and sustainable development thinking. The students will use the knowledge to develop positive attitudes to the protection and development of the environment, to understand the role of an individual in global environmental changes, and use these attitudes to influence others, especially children and young people. The students will use the knowledge acquired in the development of optimal conditions for working in school.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the students will: Understand and be able to interpret the basic knowledge about the issue of environmental factors and their positive and negative effects on the health of an individual or the whole population, Know specific preventive measures resulting from individual environmental factors, Be able to assess the impact of humans on the environment and minimize the negative impact of human activity, Know the issues of consumer behaviour in relation to food, water, waste and the environment in general.
Syllabus
  • 1. Physical, biological, chemical and social environmental factors, prevention resulting from individual factors. Noise, its harmful and disruptive effects on the organism. Diseases related to noise exposure. Anti-noise measures; 2. Physiological significance of colours. Principles of lighting hygiene relating to computer work. Types of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. Radiation diseases. Principles of preventive measures; 3. Drinking water, principles of fluid intake. Nutrition in the 21st century, GM foods, superfoods, E-chemicals in food; 4. Outdoor air and most common chemical contaminants. Housing and health; 5. Indoor air, preventive measures for staying indoors. Waste materials and health. Types and sources of waste materials. Basic principles of safe waste disposal; 6. Environment in the world and in the Czech Republic. Work and health. Working environment, hazardous workplaces, occupational diseases, specifics of the school environment

Teaching methods
Series of theoretical lectures. The lectures will include examples of scientific videos. The topic of each lecture including recommended literature will be announced one week in advance. Each lecture will be rounded off by a summary in the form of a discussion on new concepts and contexts presented and explained to students during the lectures.
