Course objectives
Classes focus on gaining basic knowledge in the field of literary theory with regards to the specifics of children’s and youth literature. After successfully completing the course, the student gains necessary basic knowledge of the matters of literary theory.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course, students will be able to:
- identify and characterize literary kinds and genres;
- analyze composition devices of a literary work;
- analyze languages devices of a literary work;
- create an analysis of a literary work based on their theoretical knowledge, practically interpret both prose and poetry;
- define the specifics of children’s and youth literature and make conclusions for their teaching practice.
Syllabus
  • 1. Course related literature. 2. Classification of literature and of literary sciences, basic terminology of literary sciences. 3. Literature, letters, national and world literature. 4. Structure of literary work, composition models, literary figures, narrator. 5. Author and addressee of literary work and their relationship. 6. Introduction to the theory of verse. 7. Prosodic systems, rhythm and rhyme. 8. Linguistic devices of literary work I. 9. Linguistic devices of literary work II. 10. Literary genres. 11. Specifics of youth literature. 12. Genres of youth literature.

Teaching methods
Type of course: lecture. A part of each lecture is devoted to examples and attempts at interpretation of literature for children.
Assessment methods
Course completion: colloquium. Students are expected to pass a final quiz which should assess their knowledge of theory of verse, genology and terminology of literature studies.The written test will consist of separately evaluated tasks (open questions), passmark is up to and including 2,9.
