Course objectives
The main objective of the course is to develop speaking, reading, writing and listening skills at the Intermediate Level. The basic study material is the coursebook New English File Intermediate supplemented by various additional materials. At the end of the course students should be able to: discuss everyday topics, communicate in everyday situations, read and listen to authentic texts at the Intermediate Level and communicate in the language fluently.
Syllabus
  • The basic study material is the coursebook New English File INTERMEDIATE (Student's book and Workbook), see Literature bellow. The syllabus includes Units 1 - 3, the focus is on speaking and listening activities and development of students' vocabulary.
  • 1st lesson: Placement test, Introduction
  • 2nd lesson: Unit 1A - Present tenses, Food and restaurants
  • 3rd lesson: Unit 1B - Past tenses, Sport
  • 4th lesson: Unit 1C - Future forms, Family and personality
  • 5th lesson: Unit 1 - Practical English - Introductions, Describing a person
  • 6th lesson: Unit 2A - Present perfect v. Past simple, Money
  • 7th lesson: Unit 2B - Present perf. cont., Descriptions, Holidays
  • 8th lesson: Unit 2C - Comparatives and superlatives, Transport and travel
  • 9th lesson: Unit 2 - Practical English - In the office, Telling a story + Credit Test
  • 10th lesson: Unit 3A - Obligations, Mobile phones
  • 11th lesson: Unit 3B - Deductions, Describing people

Assessment methods
Students have to pass 2 short credit tests (70%) focused on the vocabulary and grammar covered during the term and only then can they sit the final oral exam proving their overall grammar and vocabulary knowledge (70%) at the end of the term. Students have to prepare for lessons throughout the whole term and do homework for each lesson, which is the base for their active participation in the seminars. Most of the work is based on students' self-study.
