Course objectives
The main objective of the course is to develop speaking, reading, writing and listening skills at B1 level. The basic study material is the coursebook New English File UPPER - Intermediate supplemented by various additional materials. At the end of the course students should be able to: discuss everyday topics, communicate in everyday situations, read and listen to authentic texts at the Upper-Intermediate Level and communicate in the language fluently.

Syllabus
  • The basic study material is the coursebook New English File UPPER -INTERMEDIATE (Student's book and Workbook), see Literature bellow. The syllabus includes Units 3 - 4, the focus is on speaking and listening activities and development of students' vocabulary.

Assessment methods
Regular attendance (in case of illness - a sick note in IS necessary) Regular contributions to the forums. Maximum points for the semester : 200 points/ pass mark 140 points (to pass the tests students must reach minimum 70 %) Components of the assessment: written end-of-semester test based on the files covered in the seminars: pass mark 70%: 80 p (two resits) oral interviews: 50 p (no resits for this part, students get points for the overall assessment) 1st placement test : 10 points (beginning of the semester) 2nd placement test: 2 - 20 points (end of the semester) progress test: 10 points (mid semester, no resits) continuous assessment based on active participation in the seminars: 30 points FURTHER INFORMATION ON POINTS: PROGRESS TEST: 100-95% 10 POINTS 94-85% 9 POINTS 84-75% 8 POINTS 74-70% 7 POINTS LESS THAN 70% 1 POINT PLACEMENT TEST No.2: 25-20 CORRECT ANSWERS: 20 POINTS 19-15 CORRECT ANSWERS: 15 POINTS 14-10 CORRECT ANSWERS: 10 POINTS 9-5 CORRECT ANSWERS: 5 POINTS 4-0 CORRECT POINTS: 0 POINTS Oral interview: based on what will be done in seminars (questions based on topics in the textbooks, explanation of the words and phrases from covered units)
