Course objectives
The course presents geography as a science with it's methods of research, with it's object of study and it's partial disciplines. It presents basic statistical methods for working in geography. It deals with the basic features of the Earth as a planet, the geographical consequences of the motions and properties of the Earth. It develops skills related to selected themes and presents topics of planetary geography in teaching. The goals of the course are: A student defines the object of studying geography, uses basic statistical terms and characteristics, understands basic astronomic terms and relations directly influencing events in the landscape, explains the origin and evolution of the universe, Kepler's laws and the apparent movement of the solar system bodies. He can explain the influence of the Moon and other objects of the Solar System on Earth, draws and explains the basic elements of the orientation in Apace and on Earth, the apparent movement of the Sun through the celestial sphere, the course of the solar rays through the atmosphere, the influence of the atmosphere on the observation of the celestial bodies, explains the movement of the Earh and the Moon. At the end of the course the student will be able to: Draw the structure of geographic disciplines, calculate selected basic statistical characteristics, assemble the age structure of the population and describe it, compile pivot tables and time series, determine tasks using geographic coordinates, explain the culmination of the Sun, determine the local and zone time, calculate the distance between points on Earth to analyze and calculate the white day length. The student will also know the basic content of the theme of planetary geography in school teaching. Usage of the course in curriculum of elementary schools The subject falls primarily in the educational field "Humans and Nature", the field of study "Geography". The subject deals with the expected outputs of the thematic unit a) geographic information, data sources, cartography and topography b) natural images of the Earth and other thematic units a) environment, b) field geography, practice and applications. Cross-cutting themes: environmental education, education for thinking in European and global contexts Cross-curricular links: mathematics, physics, natural sciences.
