Course objectives
Urban geography: Main objectives this cource are follows: - to get basic survey of actual conteption in geography of cities; - the consecutive survey and interactive analysis city of Brno; - to get basic survey of city development in Czech republic. At the edn of course students will be able interpret, apply and use method of urban development in practises and to do city urban plan.

Rural geography: Aim of the subject is to get basic knowledge about rural areas in the Czech Republic with focus on processes, participants and tools of development. At the end of this course the student will be able to define the characterictic signs of rural areas, to analyze the relationship between city and countryside, identify actors and instruments of rural development. The student is able to use knowledge to create own designs leading to improved quality of life in rural areas.

  • Urban geography:
  • 1. Introduce to geography of cities.
  • 2. Cities conception, pre-industry city.
  • 3. Cities and industrial revolution. Industry city.
  • 4. Post-industry city. New conception and accesses.
  • 5. Socialistic city. New conception and accesses.
  • 6. Post-socialistic city. Space Transformation.
  • 7. Space structur of cities and her changes.
  • 8. Field course - the function of Brno (residential, utility, industrial, administrative, transportation).
  • Rural geography:
  • 1. Delimitation of rural areas.
  • 2. Changes of rural areas after 1989.
  • 3. Common Agricultural Policy and its impact on rural development.
  • 4. Participants of rural development.
  • 5. Tools of rural development.
  • 6. Problems of rural development and possibilities of their solution.
  • 7. Field work - mapping and analysis of selected problem in rural municipality.

Teaching methods
Theoretical lectures, discussion, practical projects, field work. Field work will take place in Brno and its surroundings (Lesná, Židenice, Olympia Modřice, Brno-Centre, South and Bohunice, for rural geography - Moravany, Útěchov, Jehnice, Ořešín etc.)
Assessment methods
Individual/group project developed on the basis of own field work. The project must be hand in within the specified deadline to the IS. The benefit is student´s activity on seminars.
