Cíle předmětu
The course covers the area of syntactic characteristics of the English sentence, focusing on the compound sentence (coordination) and the complex sentence (subordination). Having completed the course, the students should be thoroughly - acquainted with the areas of complementation of verbs and adjectives (infinitive vs. -ing forms) - familiar with the topics of clauses of result and cause, purpose, concession, time and relative clauses. - and able to create authentic and standard English sentences. Throughout the semester students are encouraged to link theory in the classroom to practice at schools via practical tasks.
Výstupy z učení
The students: 1. understand the linguistic terms from the area of syntax and are able to explain them on concrete examples; 2. understand the structure of the complex and compound sentence, namely in comparison with the structure of the simple sentence, with an emphasis on the similarities and differences between English and Czech; 3. know the linguistic means for the expression of different relations in the English sentence, namely with the help of nominal, adverbial, relative and comparative clauses; 4. are capable of identifying concrete syntactic means in the written text, explain them and describe them with the help of adequate linguistic terms.

Written final exam covering both Syntax A and Syntax B content, incl. translation (the passmark is 70 per cent).
