Course objectives
This is a web-based course supported by moodle. Via web-links and by using files, students can read reviews and watch trailers to the films presented in a particular semester. Students can also participate in on-line discussion forums where they express their opinion on a film they viewed. The list of films change each semester.
Syllabus (in Czech)
  • This term's films present two biographies, one partial biography, and one pseudo-biography. Two films are about two different music genres interlinked with American culture: American country and rock and rap music. The last two films are from other basket. The first film, The End of the Affair, is based on the novel by Graham Green and is inspired by Green's real-life affair with a married woman. Prick up your ears tells the life-story of British playwright Joe Orton. Walk the line explores the artistic years of the music legend Johnny Cash. The following film 8 mile will bring you to entirely different realm of music: the film reveals the sub-culture of rap musicians in the suburbs of Detroit. Altough the film stars Eminem, 8 mile is not his biography. The cultural overtones of Lost in Translation will take you from the U.S. to Japan. The last film, The Deer Hunter, is a Christmas gift for demanding film-fans. Mind you: the film lasts 182 min and is only with Czech subtitles.
