Course objectives
Students will develop all four skills, reading, listening, speaking and writing, for better communication. As they are expected to be on the upper-intermediate level, they will work on extending the range and accuracy of the language as well as the register. They will learn to analyze the language for teaching purposes and will be aware of the fact that they have changed their roles - from being the users of the language into being the source of information about the language and language model providers. As an added value to the course, students will focus on and improve key study skills (e.g. organizing study time, critical thinking, dealing with extended texts, writing assignments etc.).
Syllabus
  • The students will cover U1-5 from the book Inside Out Upper Intermediate (see Literature below).

Teaching methods
This class uses a variety of teaching methods such as pair and group work, group and class discussions, presentations, role-plays or acted-out dialogues. There is also a moodlinka site that provides students with more self-study materials.
Assessment methods
Students will have to register for two different seminar groups, for a total of 4 hours every week. The two groups will be with two different teachers.
Since this is a practical course, attendance is expected. The department sets the level of attendance at 80%, so it is suggested that students not miss more than 3 classes.
The general pass mark for this course is 70%.
In order to qualify to sit for the final test at the end of the semester, students must pass the continuous assessment of their work during the semester. The continuous assessment will be different for each teacher. Students must pass the continuous assessment in both seminar groups.
The continuous assessment will be based on work done in class with the book Inside Out as well as out-of-class assignments. The book English or CzEnglish will also be used in class. There will be quizzes in class that cover both books.
Students are also expected to study the book English Grammar In Use in their own time. That will not be tested until the end of the semester final test.
If students reach the pass mark in the continuous assessment, they will then sit the final test.
The final test will consist of evaluation of the students grammar and vocabulary based on the course book as well as general reading and listening sections.
