Course objectives
The seminar introduces students to the essentials of the literary criticism. They will study the literary works from the period of the Enlightenment and National Revival. Students will be able to identify and analyze the style of outstanding personalities, significant for that particular period. Students will further develop their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more efficiently.

  • 1. Introduction to the study of Czech literature of the first half of the 19th century. 2. Linguistic defence and its role at the beginning of Czech National Revival. 3. Literature of the Revival and its inspiration by world literature. 4. Classicism in literature. 5. Jan Kollár. 6. Old-Czech literary forgeries and their role in cultural happenings. 7. Václav Kliment Klicpera and the Czech theatre. 8. Karel Hynek Mácha and romantism in Czech literature. 9. Karel Sabina. 10. Božena Němcová. 11. Karel Havlíček Borovský. 12. Josef Jaroslav Langer.

Teaching methods
Students will get an insight into basic trends and movements of Czech literature in the period in question, as well as into the specific nature of their poetics. They will be able to identify and analyze the style of outstanding personalities, significant for that particular period. Students will further develop their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more efficiently. They will creatively use their knowledge gained not only in contact classes but also in their individual study of recommended literature which they will be able to discuss regularly with their teacher.
Assessment methods
Type of course: seminar. Type of completion: a written test in Czech literature of the first half of the 19th century and the enlightment literature. Students are also oblidged to hand in a seminar paper.
