Course objectives
The course Analysis of Cosmetic Ingredients and Products aims to introduce students to methods and procedures used in control practice to ensure an effective, reliable and safe cosmetic product. Explanations of the principles of analytical, chemical and physical methods used in the evaluation of individual quality indicators (identification, purity, content, stability) of cosmetic products are linked to the content of the Analytical Chemistry course.
Learning outcomes
The learning outcome of the course Analysis of cosmetic ingredients and products:
theoretical knowledge and practical experience of most of the methods used for complex evaluation of cosmetic products in accordance with the applicable regulations in the Czech Republic and the EU;
knowledge of methods for the evaluation of cosmetic products, namely: evidence of substances based on physical constants, by instrumental-analytical methods and by chemical reactions;
to experimentally perform stability studies of cosmetic products, evaluating relevant physical and chemical parameters including the detection and quantification of degradation products

  • - Introduction to the subject, defining the basic concepts for the analysis of cosmetic materials.
  • - Evaluation of the purity of cosmetic products by chemical methods.
  • - Evaluation of purity of cosmetic products by instrumental methods.
  • - Physical constants, and usage for the evaluation of cosmetic products.
  • - Tests of identity by physical and physical-chemical methods.
  • - Identity tests for inorganic substances.
  • - Identity tests for organic substances.
  • - Identity tests for biological substances.
  • - Content determination assay by physical-chemical methods.
  • - Content determination assay of inorganic substances.
  • - Content determination assay of organic substances.
  • - Content determination assay of biological substances.
  • - Mathematical and statistical analysis.

Teaching methods
lecture, practical exercises, discussion between students and teacher
Assessment methods
Discussion of the teacher with students during laboratory exercises. For credit: independent completion of the practical task (identification and purity of the cosmetic substance) and the written test (knowledge of the laboratory exercises, equations and calculations) at the last practice (min 60%). For examination: successful completion of the written test (min 60%) consisting of open and closed questions (knowledge of the lectures and practice).
