Course objectives
Course description: Specialized training in the use of computers for field documentation in archaeological research (GIS), their laboratory analysis and the use of computers in the documentation and analysis of archaeological collections of household goods.
Learning outcomes
After completion of the course, student will be able to analyse archaeological data using advanced methods (multivariate statistic analysis, GIS), to search for basic formal and spatial structures and to validate or interpret them.
Syllabus
  • In the seminar the students will be familiarised with methodological principles of evaluation of scientific archaeological data by means of the newest computer technologies. Emphasis is mainly put on the usage of multivariate statistical analyses (main component analysis, cluster analysis, correspondence analysis) and their practical application in archaeology. Moreover, the students are informed about geographic information systems and their integration with the statistical analyses outputs.

Teaching methods
The teaching is focused on practical approach to statistical analysis. Students can discuss statistical problems connected with their theses or projects.
Assessment methods
Students are expected to actively participate in the seminar and work with their own data in the form of databases or digital plans. At the end of the semester, a practical test will be carried out, in which the student must demonstrate the ability to work with statistical software when evaluating archaeological data.
