Course objectives
The goal of the seminar is to inform the students about the newest findings of the research on Early Medieval settlement in Central Europe, with special focus on the territories of Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia and Slovakia. The seminar will provide information on methodology, current methods and trends, the newest outcomes of scientific research, literature and scholarly conferences focused on processing of early medieval pottery.
Learning outcomes
After completion of the course, student will be able to:
- professionally analyse and evaluate voluminous assemblages of ceramic fragments from archaeological excavations
- apply modern methods of processing of ceramic finds
- understand the information potential of pottery
Syllabus
  • Introduction; why we need methodology; worldwide development of methodology of processing ceramic finds; issues addressed by traditional and modern research. Method outline.
  • Introduction. The ways of obtaining ceramic finds. Archaeological excavations and post-excavation handling of pottery. Intrusions.
  • Depositional and post-depositional processes - introduction.
  • Depositional and post-depositional processes. Archaeologically homogeneous collection, fragmentation of pottery.
  • Depositional and post-depositional processes. Surface waste areas x refuse pits, archaeologically homogeneous collection, waste areas.
  • Quality analysis of early medieval pottery. Ceramic substance - natural scientific analyses, firing.
  • Quality analysis of early medieval pottery. Forming and building. Vessel shape, decoration and surface finish.
  • Descriptive systems. Quantification. Various examples.
  • Synthesis of archaeological structures. Typology. Typology validation.
  • Chronology. Vector synthesis. PCA x seriation. Chronology validation.
  • Spatial aspect of archaeological structures. Interpretation and modelling.
  • Distribution of pottery. Model examples of ethnoarchaeological classification of production (Peacock)
  • Modelling. Ethnological models. Models derived from experimental archaeology.
