Course objectives
This course provides an overview of usage-based models of language, a fundamental view of language in the field of Cognitive Linguistics, and some possible application of Cognitive Linguistics. In this course, we will go over some selected chapters of The Mental Corpus by John R. Taylor, followed by some additional articles and chapters that demonstrate how cognitive linguistics can be applied to examine primary data from real-world language. Students will develop an individual project of his/her own research interest and will present it in-class. After taking this course, students will be equipped with basic skills of uncovering hidden cognitive and conceptual patterns underlying real-world language via a usage-based approach.
