Course objectives
The course provides an overview of the four central approaches to modern functional linguistics: pragmatics, conversational analysis, critical discourse analysis and multimodal analysis. Attention will be paid to the points of contact and the specifics of the individual methods, as well as the relationship between the verbal and the visual modes. The seminar instruction will deal with the ways speakers construct their identity and the strategies they use to attain their communicative goals. The course will involve qualitative analysis of texts - spontaneous, mass media and institutional discourses. The course is taught in English.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to:
- comprehend the main theoretical paradigms of modern functional linguistics
- perceive the differences in the different approaches to the study of discourse
- analyse material according to a selected approach
- connect micro-level analysis with a broader macro-level perspective of social practice.
