Course objectives
The course will be undertaken within the English for V4 Countries Heritage Promotion project supported by the Visegrad International Fund and in cooperation with partner universities in Slovakia (Presov), Hungary, Poland and Ukraine. The six sessions and the work done by students individually and in small groups during the semester will focus on translating texts covering museum exhibits into English and creating a bilingual glossary from the corresponding domain. (We are currently negotiating this work to be done for the Roma Museum in Brno.) Similar work will be done within translation courses at the partner universities and selected students will be able to attend two international workshops in Slovakia and Poland where experience gained in the project will be shared and creation of project outputs coordinated. Apart from the intense hands-on experience, students will have also benefited from feedback provided by native speaker experts.
Syllabus
  • 1. Text analysis, identification of translation problems.
  • 2. Glossary planning.
  • 3. Translation progress reports, experience sharing, feedback.
  • 4. Glossary progress review, experience sharing, feedback.
  • 5. Reports from partner universities, overview of translation problems and solutions.
  • 6. Feedback integration and consolidation of the outputs.
Teaching methods
Project approach, group work, experience sharing within the Czech group and with foreign partners. Peer feedback.
Assessment methods
Evaluation of the course will be based on students´ performance in the tasks - both individual and collective - assigned during the semester and the overall contribution to the successful completion of the project. Criteria: accuracy, consistency, timeliness.
