Course objectives
Students will consolidate and enhance their understanding of the concept of style and refine their sensitivity towards realizations of style in literary texts in Czech and English and will get some practice in applying these skills while improving their translation performance. They will be able to reflect on and discuss the definitions of the concept of style, the functions of style, stylistic means in Czech and English, simplified concepts of style, the system of expression proposed by Fr. Miko, microstylistics and macrostylistics, syntax and punctuation as stylistic elements, focalization, inconicity and style, mind style, fundamentals of semantics of fictional worlds, and other phenomena involved in linguistic construction of style - all that in consideration of specific texts and their translations. Students will enhance their competence in translating and evaluating stylistic shifts in both published and their own translations and get some other insights into style through the use of stylistic experiment and modelling.
