Course objectives
The course is conceived as a workshop focused on the translation of dramatic texts, starting with anecdotes and comics speeches, through the analysis of scene and sequence construction, down to translations of extracts from dramas and theatre sketches. In the course of the semester, we will try to translate of works from various epochs and of various genres, including prose and verse drama and audio-visual translation. In the second half of the term, we will be producing a group translation of a contemporary Czech drama into English. The course will be conducted in Czech; therefore, it is not suitable for foreign students.

Teaching methods
Seminars: Students prepare in advance by reading, analyzing and translating assigned texts. A major part of each teaching unit is taken up by discussion of translation problems occurring in the assigned passages, both in the specific context and on a more general level. Students practice argumentation for and against particular translation solutions. The teacher offers feedback, both written and oral, leaving some space for the students' own consideration.
Assessment methods
The assessment will be based chiefly on the student's in-class participation in the workshop and the final trenslation and translation analysis (in form of an essay).
