Course objectives
The aim of this course is to enable students to become teachers and apply their theoretical knowledge of language, language acquisition and EFL didactics to lesson planning and teaching. Students prepare and teach in small groups and will cover the four skills and systems using a variety of resources and modes of teaching. Students then reflect on their own and their colleagues’ teaching, as well as complete analytical and reflective tasks, based on recordings of their teaching practice. Students also compile a portfolio for future reference, which will be worked with at the final State exam.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, a student will be able to: 1. Plan a 45 minute English language skills/systems lesson that contains appropriate lesson aims and stages, suitable interaction patterns, a balance of activities, appropriate timing for different stages, analysis of language with a clear focus on meaning, form and use, and anticipated problems and solutions. 2. Select, adapt and supplement material appropriate to the learners’ needs; teach a class with an awareness of their needs and learning preferences. 3. Teach a 45 minute English language skills/systems lesson demonstrating effective execution of their planning, adjusting their language appropriately to the level, identifying and correcting errors, managing and organizing the class. 4. Analyse their own teaching classroom planning and practice. 5. Reflect on their teaching skills in terms of strengths and weaknesses; identify how they able to develop in the areas of weakness identified in their future teaching. 6. Give and receive constructive feedback.
Syllabus
  • 1. In small teaching practice groups, students plan and teach lessons of English on a weekly basis. 2. Classroom observation. 3. Students reflect on their practice and give and receive constructive feedback on their lessons. 4. Video-recording and analysis of the student’s own lessons.
