Course objectives
This course aims to outline the main developments in state and municipal administration in the period after 1918. There is an explanation of the issues connected to postwar attitudes towards the Austro-Hungarian administrative and legal system, a familiarization with the functions of the new constitutional bodies and institutions (the National Committee, the National Assembly), there will also be an examination of the electoral system and the main constitutional documents. Within political and municipal administration there will be a focus on the activities of the supreme administrative bodies, attempts at administrative reform – the passing of the district law and the overall renewal of the provincial administrations in 1927. There will also be a look at the changes in local administration and the process of nationalizing the higher administrative offices. There will be a special section for the issue of administrative developments after the breakup of Czechoslovakia in 1938 and the Nazi and Protectorate administrations from 1939–1945. There will also be an examination of the issues of the judiciary and economic administration.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will be able to:
- give a basic overview of the political, legislative and territorial-administrative development of Czechoslovakia;
- explain the main trends in administrative developments in the given period;
- assess the distribution and status of the sources for different topics and situations in the given period.
