Course objectives
The series of lectures and seminars aims to give students a basic overview of the development of Latin script from the 9th to the end of the 12th century. Students should master these skills: a) the typology and dating of Latin scripts, b) the palaeographic characteristics of individual script types, c) palaeographic analysis and comparison, d) transcription of Medieval Latin, German and Czech texts, e) an overview of the basic literature and editions.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:
apply their knowledge of the development of script from the 9th to the 12th century based on specific sources, particularly for dating undated texts
transcribe original Latin texts from the period 800-1200
analyse and read original Latin texts from the period 800-1200.
