Course objectives
The aim of the course is: 1) to acquaint the student with changes in the ways of measuring time and other variables, especially in the context of the history of Central Europe;
2) to teach the student to work with different systems of measuring and indicating time so that they are able to convert them;
3) to show the social impacts of different ways of measuring time and other variables, and to acquaint the student with the contemporary reflection of time and space.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
1) Recalculate historical data from older chronological systems into the contemporary calendar;
2) Be conversant with methods of measuring time, space and other variables in the past;
3) Understand the historical and social impacts of these ways of measuring and understanding the world.
Syllabus
  • 1) Contemporary measurement of space and time.
  • 2) From when is year 1 calculated? The creation of the Christian calendar and later discussions.
  • 3) Year, month and day – different ways of dividing up time within a year (including necrologies, martyrologies and calendars).
  • 4) Clocks, or the acceleration of time at the end of the Middle Ages: time measuring instruments.
  • 5) Community, liturgy and time: necrology, calendars, the libri vitae.
  • 6) From stone to stone or from tree to stone? Space and distance (ways, surveyors and millers; the question of perception of the land; old maps)
  • 7) Town hall cubit. Measuring length, volume and weight, and disciplining society.
