Course objectives
The aim of the seminar is to familiarize undergraduates with various types of academic text and draw attention to the diversity of information sources and pitfalls in working with them.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to:
- distinguish individual types of specialist texts;
- produce quotations based on the accepted norms within the discipline;
- create the basic structure of an academic text (key words, annotation, review);
- distinguish primary and secondary sources;
- reflect the ethics of academic work.
Syllabus
  • 1.–2. characteristics and purpose of academic text, choice of topics, research questions, working method;
  • 3.–4. heuristics: Sources of information (literature reviews, bibliographies, databases, the library system, library catalogues, digital resources, how to work with various sources).;
  • 5.–6. critique of sources: Critical approach to the text (secondary and primary sources, how to handle them, pitfalls of the internet);
  • 7.–8. content of the text: Structural forms (keywords, abstract, résumé, annotation, review, study, monograph, dissertation); Content side of the text (synopsis, introduction, body of the text and conclusion, weighting and prioritizing of information);
  • 9.–10. ethics and citations: Ethics of working with sources (quotations, paraphrasing); Citations in the text (general rules, ČSN norms, different fields, different types of citation);
  • 11.–12. form and final editing of the text: Modifying the form of the text (headings, paragraphs, fonts), copyediting, proofreading, peer review report, proofreading symbols.

Assessment methods
The awarding of credits is conditional upon completing individual seminar tasks: a) producing literature reviews and bibliographies on a selected topic, b) mastering various citation practices, c) producing an annotation of a selected text, d) review of a selected book. Credits will be awarded on the basis of discourse about these tasks.
